Legacy:The big Legacy element of this Chapter was the introduction of the Otherworlds, and to be honest, they were overwhelming. The Betrayal Legacy Chronicles, Part One discussed the first four adventures, while this continues this series with Chapters Four through Six. Every time you sit down to play Betrayal Legacy, you must create a new person in your family tree. We just finished the campaign and I've got a few questions. But inBetrayal Legacy, all players can do is choose whether to mark Legacy items (which they do if they can) and whether to win or lose (but thats scarcely achoice). But now that were four games in, were more looking forward to seeing how things advance, because it feels like the Legacy and the co-op play are clicking in a way that they werent early on. Honestly, its not the most interesting storyline, but the gameplay makes up for it. One weird Legacy item does show up at the end of the game: a helm that we can place our family crest stickers upon. Legacy: Were back to the core Legacy play being relatively shallow, though our cooperative play helps a few of the Legacy items get to the right people. First, players got to claim items for their family. One mission immediately starts with a haunt, for example. Unfortunately, it was two spaces away and she only had one ranged weapon. Our only big surprise is finding out more about the helm, as we learn it can be used to select a player, which means that players that use its power more are more likely to be selected. Read on! Thats because theres no way to provide help in the Otherworlds, and once the resources are recovered, theyre mostly in the form of curses that cant be traded away. The way the haunt endscouldbe used to as a Legacy element in future games, but that doesnt occur in the Prologue because its a total railroad, which means theres only one way for it to end. One of the difficulties of Legacy games `is that they tend to start off with simple rules, then make them more complex game by game. I didnt actually realize this until I saw an interview on Geek & Sundry with designer Rob Daviau. I completed this campaign over a year ago and I still remember it with a fondness. Just know there are so many smart ways Betrayal Legacy plays with expectations of those familiar with vanilla Betrayal. Its probably not giving too much away to say that generic man/woman icons are used for a reason, as there will be new NPCs throughout the campaign. It was a perfect touch that really brought the game home for me. So, we select for items and against omens, under the theory that its 80% likely to benefit each of us. Certain cards are destroyed or temporarily taken out of the game. The Omen cards are the most familiar, but thats our main continuity. And then we get to the haunt and theres no traitor. Speaking of which. Our first clue is a really big number on Octavia (we think its a 9, but it turns out to be a 6). Simultaneously, there's the second overarching story of the family legacy of the players, who alter the house and its contents along the way. You destroy the deed. We do. Its tons of fun, with a great story, and really interesting mechanics. There are 13 games remaining. The fact that the example is something that can happen, is triggered outside of the haunt deck, and comes from almost nowhere is kind of genius. It was such a great way to walk off. What happens in between games is the most interesting part of Betrayal Legacy. (Mind you, Im not convinced that the particular cards added were that evocative of what happened, but wed see better use of this element a few Chapters down the road. Legacy:Obviously, all you can do in the first game of a Legacy campaign is set up Legacy elements. Legacy:On our third outing, were just not feeling the Legacy. I was actively trying to get that third check to read story and see the horror unleashed. It has to have been mentioned during the final scenario as several of the cards reference the Mundane Elevator specifically so it can't have transformed before that. This level of complexity is nice because it increases the possibilities for strategic play, allowing for some asymmetric cooperation. I feel like this should have been opened when we transformed the elevator, but nothing on the card said to open door 6. . Nobody owned the house anymore and the story reflected it. This time one of the characters is possessed by an evil axe-murdering spirit. It's even possible to keep your character from a previous game, assuming they made it out of the mission alive. This can be for attack, defense, an Event card or a Haunt roll. It will contain **Spoilers up to and including Game 2**. Not only do we get a Sickle of War Legacy item to its appropriate family but the player then uses it to kill the evil baby! Mind you,Betrayal Legacysuffers somewhat from the lack of task stabilization discussed on page 88 ofMeeples Together: every time someone attacks a foe, the foe gets an opportunity to attack them back. Until the end. Figure 4-2: We always remember the previous Omen cards, but the rest of the decks have almost no Legacy meaning to us. So, the Otherworlds could have been the best of the best. It really was that much fun. If youve never tried a Betrayal game then I suggest seeking out and giving the original a chance with the knowledge that some of the things that dont work there have been tweaked for the Legacy game. Were terrified of the traitor, so we immediately move on to stepii, where we engage in tactical cooperation (like we theoretically could have in Chapter One if wed been better equipped) to kill her. Still, were always going to remember the murderer who took over the house. Part of that was learning the story elements that will return in future games, including the rooms that make up the house (and its grounds), as well as items. Betrayal Legacy is now available wherever board games are sold. Wed suddenly become the lost souls in the middle of the night seeking shelter. Sadly, its again pretty rudimentary cooperation. In the prologue, we explored the House for the first time, then when a Chalice of Insanity was uncovered, we all tried to kill each other under the (false) theory that we were cooperating to kill a hidden traitor. We often found the original game too random, and we felt like the long turns and variable length games often resulted in some or all players never getting off their feet, and so not getting to really experience the adventurous elements of the game. We all knew it would be bad, but we all had different reactions to it. We werecertainthat none of us were a witch, and yet we also werent. In the haunt books there is a Haunt 0, which is an example haunt to teach players how they work. That stickered-over tile, The Chasm, is an entrance to the Otherworlds, which appear as 28 new cards that we add to our box. Also that they let the first person to die know that there wasnt a witch just in case people were confused was so nice. The design of this insert was so good that it made getting rid of it seem foolish since it organized everything so well, and perfectly held a second box of miniatures for when the game goes from old world aesthetic to a more modern focus.
